Dual of the Week: #12 Oklahoma City vs. Wayland Baptist

PLAINVIEW, TEXAS - In a battle of pioneer programs, Wayland Baptist hosted #12 Oklahoma City in NAIA Sooner Athletic Conference action on December 2nd, falling by a 25-21 score to the visiting Stars.

Both colleges were some of the earliest to launch women’s programs, with Oklahoma City launching in 2007 and Wayland Baptist inaugurating their first season in 2009. Their storied programs also boast familiar names in their history, as Oklahoma City’s past rosters feature athletes Ashley Sword (2007), Michaela Hutchison (2008-2012), and Kristie Davis (2009-2012). Wayland Baptist was once the home of 2020 Olympic gold medalist Tamyra Mensah-Stock and current Senior level athlete Nahiela Magee (2014-2016).

Saturday night’s event featured two top-10 wrestlers*, both on the OCU roster, with #2 Avery Ashley earning a technical fall at 116 and #8 Sophia Smith getting another in the next match at 123. The one-two punch of Ashley and Smith led the way to victory in a close dual over the league rival Pioneers 25-21.

The only match that did not end with early termination was at 170, where Wayland Baptist’s Mohagany Casel secured a gritty win over OCU’s Rayleigh Fisher 8-2.
