Five Double Up At Deep South Summer Nationals
Tennessee’s Audrey Levendusky doubled-up at Deep South Summer Nationals.
BIRMINGHAM - Top female high school wrestlers gathered from over a dozen states in Birmingham at Deep South Summer Nationals last Friday to compete for titles in folkstyle and freestyle divisions. When the final whistle blew, five girls had doubled up, earning titles in both divisions.
North Carolina’s Addison Gore won it all at 120; Florida’s Rachel Silva earned both crowns at 132; Alabama’s Kimber Alford won at 138; North Carolina’s Riley Johnson was on top at 145, and Tennessee’s Audrey Levendusky sat on the throne, literally, at 160 pounds. The tournament featured a podium with a royal throne and scepter for the champion. The winners were awarded crown-shaped medals and actual crowns for each division.
Tennessee’s Audrey Levendusky put on one of the most dominant performances at the event, going 6-0 between the two divisions, every match ending in the first period by fall or technical fall. In spite of that fact, she had to come back from a deep hole to beat Florida’s Torrina Rushing in a battle of Fargo All-Americans, earning a fall with a lateral drop deep in the first period. Levendusky, a 160-pounder, earned her freestyle title in a combined 160-170 weight class.
Johnson, a 2023 North Carolina 16U freestyle state champion, also had a dominant day, going 6-0 with five first-period falls and a technical fall.
Gore, a North Carolina state champion, was 8-0 at the event, earning four falls, two technical falls, a major decision, and a 13-6 decision on the day. In the freestyle finals, she put away the undefeated Alabama state champion, Julianna Eldridge, with a first-period fall.
Silva, a two-time Florida state medalist, including a trip to the state finals in 2024, had to grind through close matches at 132, winning four matches by decision, including a tight 8-6 win in the folkstyle division semifinals. In the freestyle finals, she earned a first-period fall for the top spot on the podium.
Alabama state champ Kimber Alford had a busy day, going 7-0 between the two divisions, earning four pins, two technical falls, and one major decision. One of her pins came in the freestyle finals, a first period victory over Tennessee state medalist Ali Bryant.
The event was held at the BJCC North Exhibition Hall in Birmingham, Alabama. All results:
